To the parents, friends and grandparents who attended the Cultural Evening on Thursday 4th September thank you very much for supporting the children and our school. The learners who participated were very talented and rehearsed the acts well. Congratulations to these children.

Special thanks to all the staff who worked hard behind the scene to make the event a success. For those of you who don’t know the drama group participated in the Eisteddfod and performed “The Grinch Who stole Christmas” the play received great recognition from the Eisteddfod judges and the school was awarded a Prestige Certificate.

Cultural activities shouldn’t be overlooked as it helps the children improve their vocabulary, boost their confidence and enables them to experience a different side to the school other than just academics and sport.

Thank you to Mrs Van Dijk for all her organising and patience.

Guide Dogs
Guide Dogs 150 150 schoolman

The Grade 6 Learners went to the school hall to learn more about the South African Guide Dog Association. The Guide Dogs help hundreds if not thousands of visually impaired people every year and rely heavily on funding and donations from the public.

As a non profit organisation the Guide Dog Association is run extremely well and it is important for the learners at AMPS to understand the difficulties visually impaired people face on a day to day basis. Thank you to the Grade 6 teachers for organizing this demonstration and thank you to the South African Guide Dogs Association for coming to the school to demonstrate their magnificent animals.

Drama Eisteddfod

The Eisteddfod is happening in the School Hall on Tuesday 26th August at 14:15

The Cultural Evening will be taking place on the 4th of September at 18:30 – please note there will be a full dress rehearsal on the Monday (1st September 14:00-16:00)

  • The Culture Evening will showcase some talented individuals, the school has recently installed newer lights and sound and we look forward to providing a great professional and entertaining show.
  • The tuckshop will be open during intervals, no hot foods, just chips, chocolates and cold drinks will be served
  • Parking will be on the big field
  • Tickets sold at the door R30 for Adults and R10 for children under 13 years old

Farewell
Farewell 150 150 schoolman

Aston Manor will see one or two staff changes as we say farewell to Mr Deon Badenhorst, Miss Cheryl Crichton and Mrs Jenny Wilkinson. These staff members have been at AMPS for a number of years and we’re sad to see them go.

Mr Badenhorst has been the school bus driver, teacher and coach at AMPS successfully for more than 10 years, Miss Crichton has been the school Librarian also for in excess of 10 years. Both these members of staff have many many years of teaching experience at other schools as well and are at retirement age. We know the learners, staff and parents at AMPS wish these staff members all the best for the future

Mrs Wilkinson has been at the school tuckshop and swap shop for more than 20 years – she has always been actively involved in assisting fun days and events and is a lovable sole who will be missed.

Fortunately as we go through staff changes, we have rock solid upper management, parental support and excellent staff who ensure no area is left unattended or disrupted. All our best wishes and support go to Miss Crichton, Mr Badenhorst and Mrs Wilkinson – good luck 🙂

Safety Show & End of Term

As we near the end of term 2 we’d like to thank the parents, children and staff for their hard work throughout the term. We hope the children enjoy their winter holiday. If you or your children are travelling please travel safely and stay warm during the winter months. We’d also like to thank Mr Holloway from the SAPS for arranging a Safety Demonstration for the school. Note: Children are required to collect their report cards tomorrow morning at the start of school, then they may go home.

The Children all went to the field and watched a safety briefing. Firearms, drugs, police dogs, first aid and medical services were discussed as well as what to do in certain situations. The SAPS then demonstrated how they work and gave us all a great show. Apart from a fun filled hour we hope the children all learned something and will remember how to handle themselves should a difficult situation arise.

Uniform

Changing of Seasons-

Children may wear their winter uniform as soon as they find it too cold to wear their summer clothes, however children may not mix and match their summer and winter uniforms. AMPS Beanies (R60) and Scarves (R60) if you buy both the Scarf and Beanie together (Combo R115) These are available from the school office.

Please note that AMPS Beanies may only be worn on extremely cold days and must be removed indoors, when worn they must be placed correctly on the child’s head. Children must be neatly dressed at all times, especially out in public, remember the image of the school is carried by the image of our children,parents and staff portray. Teach your child to appreciate values such as being respectful and polite to everybody they deal with at all times.

We competed against some of the other schools in the area in athletics. Out of the seven schools AMPS came second overall. We are very proud of the athletes who participated and would like to congratulate not only them but the staff, coaches and parents of AMPS. The weather was good, nice and hot!

AMPS funded Geebee Polar Bear Dies at 29
AMPS funded Geebee Polar Bear Dies at 29 150 150 schoolman

Those parents at AMPS will know that we have supported and funded one of two Polar Bears at the Johannesburg Zoo for some time now. Early today it was announced on the radio and brought to our attention that GeeBee (the Polar Bear) died on the 12th of January, Sunday at the age of 29 due to natural causes. At 29 years of age this is considered old for a polar bear so all in all she did pretty well for such an old bear. More information below (sourced from enca.com )

Geebee passed away on Sunday evening at the age of 29.

In a statement issued by the zoo, manager of veterinary services Doctor Katja Koeppel said Geebee began medical treatment for diarrhoea last week and she responded well to the treatment but after a few days rejected further medication.

“Early on Monday morning during routine checks we discovered that she had passed away. It is suspected this is due to natural causes relative to age.  At 29-years-old, polar bears are considered old for their species,” said Koeppel.

Geebee and Wang arrived at the Joburg Zoo in 1986. Geebee came from Canada and Wang is from Japan. The pair developed a strong bond over the last 30 years.

The zoo said Wang displays unusual behaviour and has been, to some extent, destructive and restless.

“Anticipated loss of appetite and constant pacing in his enclosure is expected as well.  Veterinary staff has assured the general public that he will be closely monitored to ensure his continued wellbeing due to his failing health as well,” read a statement from the zoo.

Joburg Zoo said it will not be replace Geebee, a decision influenced by Johannesburg’s weather conditions.

“Despite polar bears being highly adaptive, Johannesburg’s climatic conditions are not ideal for breeding purposes. Polar bears adapt really well to different conditions, however, will not breed in warmer climates as they require low temperatures to ovulate, so from a conservation perspective, replacing Geebee with another polar bear does not make sense,” said the zoo.

AMPS funded “Joshua” a baby chimpanzee from Johannesburg zoo as well a few years back. Sadly Joshua also passed away. Animals are a gift and we should cherish them. If you have the means to support a charity you must do so. The people who care for these animals need your help.

Welcome Back
Welcome Back 150 150 schoolman

Welcome back to School. We trust you and your family had a great festive season and we wish you all the very best for 2014. Please continue to support your children and the staff as we’re sure you have in the past.

We’ve just started and already the year is full of meetings, dates and items to complete! Today as I walked from the office I saw Grade 1 children having photos taken, heard Grade 4 children counting in Afrikaans and heard Gr 2 children spelling words aloud. The Grade 6’s we’re already starting in their books and busy with textbooks. The Grade 7 prefects and monitors were already on duty bright and early and the Grade 3 children were working hard trying to get used to their new surroundings.

So it looks like we’re all back to working hard!

Thank you to the supportive staff, parents and of course the children of Aston Manor Primary School – let’s have a productive, fun and happy 2014!
